What Can You Do To Maintain Good Eye Health?
Your eyes are so much more than just the windows to your soul; they are also a major organ and something that should never be taken for granted. Looking after your eyes is essential and maintaining their health will always be in your best interests.
At EyeQ we try to answer all your eye health related questions by posting a new blog each week. We do this to try and help you pick up the early warning signs that may require attention, and ensure your prescription glasses or contact lenses are ideally suited to your needs.
To help you keep your eyes healthy, we also suggest following these simple guidelines:
Know Your Eye Health History
In addition to knowing your own eye health history it’s vital you know that of your families too. Chat to your family members about their eye health, about any conditions they have suffered from, and whether they have experienced changes as they have grown older. By sharing your family’s eye health history with an EyeQ optometrist, we can keep tabs on any changes in your vision and determine if you are potentially at risk of developing an eye condition or disease.
Eat Right And Protect Your Sight
We’ve all heard about how carrots are good for our eyes but eating a diet that’s rich in vegetables, especially those that are green and leafy is key to great eye health. It’s also been proven that there are numerous health benefits for eyes in eating fish high in omega 3 fatty acids, so its suggested you add a regular helping of tuna or salmon to your menu too!
Protect Your Eyes
Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory; they also provide protection from the suns harmful rays. Look after your eyes by wearing a decent pair of sunglasses that blocks out UVA and UVB rays and avoid cheap sunglasses, as they can do more harm than good. A good pair of sunglasses with proven sun protection is an investment and will protect your eyes properly.
Take A Break
Your eyes can easily take strain, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of the TV, on the computer, or reading. Other activities that the eyes may find strenuous including driving and sport, and regardless of what you are doing, its always a good idea to take a break from time to time to give your eyes a rest.
When you are focusing intently on one thing you may find you forget to blink, and your eyes become fatigued. The 20-20 -20 rule is an excellent one to ensure you give your eyes a rest. For every 20 minutes spent focusing on something, take a 20 second break and look at something about 20 feet in front of you, as this will help reduce eyestrain.
Have An Annual Eye Exam
An annual eye exam can be instrumental in maintaining good eye health. Your optometrist will pick up any changes that may have occurred, be able to check your glasses or contact prescription and even chat to you about new products and technologies that may make your life that much easier. This is especially true for contact lens wearers, as new products are released all the time and as a progressive optometry practice, EyeQ is always on the cutting edge of the latest developments.
Good eye health should never be ignored and it’s surprisingly easy to maintain, as long as you know how.
